An Indiana State Police Trooper is credited with saving the life of a man whose leg was severed in a crash in Cass County, Indiana.

The collision happened around 6:50 a.m. on Saturday on Cass County Road 825 West near Cass County Road 250 North.

A 19-year-old Burnettsville man was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southbound on County Road 825 West near County Road 250 North when the Chevy traveled off the road, into a wooded area, and hit several trees, according to the preliminary investigation.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital with possible broken bones and internal injuries.

A 21-year-old man from Royal Center who was riding in the car was ejected.

His left leg was severed below the knee. Indiana State Police Trooper Chris Miller applied a tourniquet to the leg to stop blood loss from the injury and possibly saved the man’s life.

The passenger was also airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital.

The injured men had been at a campfire prior to the crash. When they did not return to the campfire as expected, a group of friends went looking for them. The friends found the crashed vehicle and injured men and called 911.

Neither the driver or the passenger were wearing seat belts, according to police.
