Elkhart’s Fire and Police Departments are moving across town with their new upgrade. In order to accommodate the new plans for the joint building they will be moving to the former Bayer building on the Northwest side.

The building that the police are currently in was built in 1975 and they have long since outgrown it. The communications department, which will also move to the new location, is currently located in the original police station built in 1865.

The Elkhart Truth reports the former Bayer property will cost the city $1.2 million, and another $2.2 million has been set aside for the design and construction phases.

They will have about 25 acres total at the new site.
