UPDATE: Suspect Shot After Police Chase Near North Liberty

Police have released more details into the pursuit this morning. We still don’t have any identification on the suspect or details on his condition. Several officers had to be treated after the chase but everyone appears to be alright.

The full release is below:

Approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning St Joe County PD, Walkerton PD, & LaPorte County PD assisted North Liberty PD in a high-speed pursuit of a suspicious vehicle returning stolen plates. During the chase, the suspect vehicle entered and drove through multiple farm fields with lights darkened in the area of Walnut/Leeper/SR 23. During the pursuit the suspect also rammed police vehicles with his vehicle. The pursuit ended in a field off Leeper Road & SR 23, at approximately 5:30 am. A Walkerton PD car and the suspect’s vehicle became engulfed in flames. During the chase in the corn field, shots were fired by officers towards the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect, a white male, was hit by gun fire. Officers removed the suspect from the engulfed vehicle and provided immediate medical attention to his gunshot wounds. The suspect was taken to Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The field also caught fire around the vehicles and officers. Fire and EMS were dispatched. The fire was reported under control at 6:24 am. Multiple officers have been taken to receive medical treatment for smoke inhalation. County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting.
