SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The University of Notre Dame is delaying its plan to cover up 19th century murals depicting Christopher Columbus in America that have long been criticized for their stereotypical images of Native Americans and blacks.
The Catholic university based in South Bend, Indiana, announced in January that it would conceal the offending artwork. The school’s president, the Rev. John I. Jenkins, said last month that a new exhibit will explore Notre Dame’s early history, including images of the Columbus murals and information about their historical importance.
School spokesman Dennis Brown told the South Bend Tribune this week that Notre Dame won’t cover the 1880s paintings until the museum is completed in 2022.
Students, employees and alumni signed a letter in a 2017 campus newspaper calling for the murals to be removed.

What are we going to do when we have removed all our history? Just because we remove all evidence of what we don’t like dosen’t mean it didn’t happen. People don’t realize what a trip like that was, would any of them go more than across town without their GPS how about across the unknown world without even a map.
Absolutely ridiculous! Maybe a few students will be offended by catholic priests running the college…I guess the priests will have to be removed from campus then right? So PC it is sickening. Do we know if Father Sorin was a pedophile? Statistics says he may have been. We know for sure he discriminated against women as Notre dame was a Men only college. All his statues and paintings will need to be removed.
Why do A FEW get to call the shots for the majority. Get over yourselves. YOU were not a victim! Most people know how to look at a painting and think, “I am glad we have moved forward.” Wait, no we have not! We cannot let it go because of those stuck in the past who are unable to move forward and make a positive difference. A positive difference is NOT trying to rewrite history and eliminating those episodes that today we find deplorable. If we continue to erase what was, you can bet the bad things will be repeated. In fact, we are doing it today. We condemn Christian’s who have beliefs and donate money to groups that promote their belief of family. It is their freedom to do so. Those organizations do not promote hate or harm to others. Sorry. They just do not support financially ideas they do not embrace. Infact, Barefoot Wines financially supports everything gay. I say good for them. I do not support how their PRIVATE MONEY is spent. Current intolerance tells me lie and destroy them. I prefer to take the high road. I just buy something else! Duh!
