IU-South Bend is offering a free master’s degree to any student will commit to teaching in the city.

It’s a partnership between IUSB and the South Bend Community School Corporation.

WSBT reports that it’s a program supported by a recent grant, and an effort to help fill a long-standing teacher shortage in the city. Up to 20 students would have the opportunity to take advantage of the program. The district has nearly two dozen jobs open right now, most of them in math and science classrooms.

The degree program, which begins in the spring, has the expectation that the students will stay in teach in the South Bend Schools for at least three years.
