Teachers from PHM schools suspend classes on Tuesday to attend Red for Ed Day

From ista-in.org

Penn Harris Madison students will have the day off of school on Tuesday, Nov. 19, as the district’s teachers will attend the Red For Ed rally in Indianapolis. PHM teachers are among several throughout Michiana who plan to attend the demonstration in hopes of earning more money.

The message below was sent to all P-H-M parents from the Superintendent’s Office the morning of Friday, Nov. 15, 2019:

Penn-Harris-Madison’s outstanding teachers are a critical component to P-H-M’s Triangle of Success providing excellent instruction to our students. In support of teachers and fair funding for public education, P-H-M has strong track record of working with State Legislators.

As momentum has grown for the “Red for Ed” action day at the State Legislature next Tuesday, Nov. 19, more Penn-Harris-Madison teachers have expressed interest to travel to Indianapolis to participate.

We fullly support their efforts. Therefore, all 15 P-H-M schools will be closed next Tuesday, Nov. 19. Administrative offices will remain open. Principals will adjust extracurricular activities as needed and will communicate any changes to their building parents and staff.

We will make up the day at the end of the school year. This will make the last day of school for P-H-M students Thursday, June 4.

Thank you for all you do as families to support our teachers.

Indiana Teacher’s Association Red for Ed Action Day-a day when teachers from all around the state meet at the state house to advocate for public education. The problem is with so many teachers taking the day off schools don’t have the resources to keep class open.

South Bend Community Schools has already announced they will be closed, and so has Concord Community Schools. Superintendents from both of those school districts released statements saying they are happy to support their teachers and the opportunity to exercise their rights and support.
