Concerns about potential conflicts of interest led to the Berrien County Commissioner being suspended from a committee on Thursday.
Commissioner Teri Freehling was suspended from the Personnel and Human Services Committee for 60 days after a special counsel presented a nine-page report. It detailed more than 400 thousand dollars received by her husband for contracts from the drain commission for renting equipment to an excavation company. She voted on some of those contracts.
In September the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office decided not to pursue misdemeanor criminal charges for failing to disclose the possible conflicts of interest after an investigation into the matter.
