Update on Elkhart River District construction improvements

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese has announced all streets are now open to vehicle traffic in Elkhart’s River District.

This marks the completion of major road reconstruction in the area, including the most recent addition of curbs, gutters, on-street parking, sidewalks, and lighting along Lexington Avenue and Junior Achievement Drive.

Both streets provide parking opportunities and connectivity to the newly renovated LEX 530 Event Center and the ongoing River Pointe West mixed-use neighborhood center development. With major road reconstruction complete, crews will now focus on the installation of pavers and decorative block walls as weather permits.

The transformation of the Elkhart River District will continue in 2020 with additional utility relocations, sidewalk and streetlight installation, and other finishing touches. Residents should also anticipate the construction of two new public spaces: the Riverwalk Plaza and the River District Town Green.

The Riverwalk Plaza will offer a unique amenity at the junction of Junior Achievement Drive and the Elkhart River. It will include benches, walkways, lighting, and a new public access point for canoes and kayaks to enter the river. The River District Town Green will be immediately adjacent to the new Martins Supermarket and will include open green space, seating, and lighting in a small-park setting.

Mayor Neese’s intent of the River District Revitalization Project is to develop a vibrant urban space that complements existing Main Street assets and creates a destination where people want to live.

The plan calls for the development of 1000+ housing units in the River District and surrounding area to meet current market demand. These additional units are supported by a housing market study completed by the renowned Zimmerman Volk and Associates.

The streetscape project will enhance new, exciting investments and private development occurring in the area, including Elkhart Health and Aquatics, Stonewater at the Riverwalk, and River Pointe West.
