Indiana now has 19 baby boxes statewide

Indiana now has nearly 20 baby boxes in place for surrendered newborns.

Two more of the potentially life-saving boxes have been added in cities in the Hoosier State.

The latest were put into place Sunday at the New Haven Fire Station near Fort Wayne, and Monday at the Columbia City fire station, which brings the total to 19 across the state.

Those boxes are containers with a door to the outside of a fire station building. When they’re opened as someone leaves a baby there, an alarm sounds to alert on-duty staff.

Area locations include Michigan City, Hammond, Syracuse, and Warsaw. You can learn more at https://shbb.org/
