Modification of river dam in Elkhart given the go-ahead

The modification of the river dam in Elkhart has been given the go-ahead.

An exact date hasn’t been set, that will depend on water levels, but it should start sometime in the next few weeks.

The contractor that will be doing the work was hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after it was determined that the dam had significant structural issues.

The plan was initially to remove it all together but instead it will be lowered several feet and they will build a cascading rifle downstream that will allow fish to swim upstream and maintain the waterfall look.

This also will open it up for canoeing and kayaking.

It’s unknown how long the project will take to complete.
