The State of Michigan will be swapping out 4,000 ankle monitors for units that offer a tech upgrade.

More than 4,000 parolees and others under state supervision will be fitted with the new monitors, according to M-Live.

Verizon is upgrading their network from 3G to 4G, which will negate the effectiveness of the current 3G monitors.

The upgrading to the new 4G tethers will cost the state roughly $4.6 million. The new gear arrived in early January and about 16% of the devices have been swapped out so far. The new ones also have improved security and are harder to tamper with.
