President Donald Trump leaned hard on the strong U.S. economy as he made the case for his reelection in the State of the Union address. His speech came at an extraordinary moment, on the eve of a Senate vote on his impeachment, where he is expected to be acquitted and become the first president with that stain on his record to actively campaign for a second term. The tension in the room was clear, including an icy exchange with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Local reaction came in to 95.3 MNC after President Trump’s address:

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill released the following statement:

“Thanks to the hard work put forward by our President, his administration, and Republican leaders across the country starting with 26 Republican attorneys general, the state of our Union is strong and thriving.

“I, like my colleagues and President Trump, remain committed to standing strong for justice, fairness, and the Constitution. And I look forward to continuing our work to further this ‘Great American Comeback,'” said Hill.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) released the following statement:

“President Trump delivered an optimistic message about our country’s future and renewed his commitment to preserving and strengthening the American Dream.

“Our economy is booming, with more jobs and higher wages for hardworking Americans and new opportunities for our farmers, manufacturers, and small businesses. I stand ready to work with the president to continue building on that momentum and ensure working families have every opportunity to thrive, including by expanding access to paid family leave.

“President Trump has been steadfast as commander-in-chief in the face of national security threats from terrorists and rogue regimes, and his leadership in rebuilding our military has made our country safer. I look forward to continuing our work together to strengthen our national security, support our service members, and ensure our veterans get the care and services they earned.

“The president’s agenda is one that puts the American people first and keeps our country on the path to a better, stronger, and more prosperous future. It’s time for Congress to put divisiveness and partisanship aside so we can make this bold vision a reality.”

U.S. Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) released the following statement:

“President Trump delivered an optimistic message tonight and rose above the circus and petty politics that has mired Capitol Hill in recent months.

“He’s the most effective president of my lifetime and has a lot of accomplishments to highlight.

“America’s future is bright. We have a president who has fought so hard to deliver on his campaign promises. He’s fought for results, and we are now beginning to enjoy the fruit of those results.

“America is stronger than ever. Our economy is booming. Our military is strong. Working families are looking forward to their better future. President Trump has delivered a blue collar boom that has earned him generous support in states like mine.

“Northeast Indiana manufacturers, farmers, small business owners and veterans—the people that make Indiana work—tell me they are better off because of the Trump presidency.”

U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) issued the following statement:

“Tonight, President Trump delivered an optimistic message about the great successes we have achieved over the last three years and the work that remains in order to keep America strong.

“Spurred by lower taxes, fewer regulations, and emerging trade deals, we are poised to continue this period of economic growth. More people are working than ever, and this economic surge is creating new opportunities for people of every background. It is critical that we continue, and build upon, this momentum.

“President Trump also outlined the work that remains to support working families, including lowering the cost of health care and prescription drug prices. I will continue working with the President and my colleagues in Congress to tackle these challenges.

“Tonight’s address provided a clear contrast between the Republican policies that are working for American families and the socialist policies being championed by national Democrats on the far left, which would lead to higher taxes, fewer jobs, and less freedom.

“It’s clear that Republicans offer a better path forward for a stronger, safer, and more prosperous America, and I look forward to continue working with President Trump on behalf of Hoosiers and all Americans.”
