Changes are coming to US 12 and M51 south of Niles

A huge project south of Niles is about to make a big change at a busy intersection.

The overpass for US 12 over M 51 is more than 50 years old. MDOT says the bridges will be coming down in favor of a new level intersection that should be finished in 2023.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the new interchange will not be a large roundabout, something that was met with criticism at public meetings. Instead, a traffic signal with indirect left turns, or “Michigan Lefts” will be installed.

The $26 million project will also include indirect lefts at the intersection of US 12 and 3rd Street.
