Woman in Mishawaka jailed after running into man she accused of assault

A woman has been arrested, suspected of running over a man who she told police had assaulted her.

It was shortly after 12 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, when Mishawaka Police
officers were dispatched to a domestic violence call in the 1900 block of East 4th Street.

The caller told the dispatcher she had been assaulted by a man and that he had taken her phone and had left on foot. The caller stated that she was going to follow him in her car to get her phone back.

While responding to that call, officers came upon the woman, Evelyn Cross-Malone, 26, standing outside of a vehicle at the intersection of 4th Street and Home Street.

Officers also located a 46-year-old man lying near the curb, suffering from injuries consistent with being struck with a vehicle.

The man, who was the person Cross-Malone accused of assaulting her, was taken to Memorial where he was treated for a broken leg and spinal injuries. As of Sunday afternoon, he was listed in serious condition.

Cross-Malone was arrested and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminarily suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury.
