Short trips, homemade masks, aggressive action among Whitmer’s recommendations to flatten Michigan’s curve

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the state’s Chief Medical Executive, held a press conference Monday morning to update the state’s effort to fight COVID-19.

Whitmer said Michiganders are traveling less than people in neighboring states, taking the stay-at-home order seriously. She also said she’s considering extending the order in the coming week.

She recommended any trips outside the home involve a homemade mask, stressing the need for professional masks to be saved for medical professionals who need them most. She pointed out that there are a number of patterns to make them on the internet. Whitmer also recommended reserving trips out of the house for necessities only.

The state had 15,718 positive tests on Sunday, with 617 deaths. Dr. Khaldun said there are over 1000 new cases in The Great Lakes State each day. She said rapid testing is coming to several cities around the state, with special attention for the southeast part of the state where hospitals continue to be overwhelmed.

There are more than 3,700 patients hospitalized with coronavirus in Michigan, with 1,383 of them on ventilators. Khaldun says 89% of those hospitalized are in the state’s southeast region.

Whitmer says pulling the legislature together to address the public heath crisis is difficult, given the distances many have to travel, and the potential for exposure. Another lawmaker in the state has been diagnosed in recent days.

The governor recommended that people consider donating food, donating blood, and helping volunteer to make medical supplies if they’re able.

Regarding the economic impact of spending associated with the fight against the virus, Whitmer said “the worst thing we can do for our economy is have a porous set of policies, that means we are confronting the crisis longer.” She called for a more aggressive initial action, and said “that’s what Michigan is doing.”
