St. Joseph County residents may see a procession of lights and sirens this evening.

That’s because area police and fire departments are taking part in a procession aimed to show support and appreciation for medical personnel in the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

Procession routes will first stage at 8 p.m., then take off on two routes to visit three separate area hospitals. Routes are as follows:

  • One group will meet in the parking lot of the Century Center and head to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
  • The second group will meet in the parking lot of Strikes and Spares and then go to both St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Beacon Hospital in Granger.

The two groups will depart at 8:30 p.m. and will stage at the hospitals’ main entrance upon arrival. A department chaplain also plans to lead first responders in prayer and appreciation of medical staff at each location.

The event has been organized by South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski and St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redman.
