South Bend man strands his car on the tracks; steals another and crashes it

The crashes happened in Elkhart County. 39 year old Alvin Phillips is facing a felony charge of auto theft to go with two misdemeanor counts of OWI.

The first car he crashed was his own; he apparently got it stuck on the tracks in Nappanee. Officers tried to give him a break by allowing him to leave on his own recognizance after a few hours of sleep, and leave charges to the prosecutor’s office.

However after being released he stole a car that was left outside running and crashed that one along US 6. Police say Phillips was cooperative after they tracked him down for the arrest.
