Construction on new upper East Bank Trail connection set to start

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)

Construction on a new upper East Bank trail connection is set to begin Tuesday, May 26.

This new portion of the trail will be along Northside Boulevard between Howard Park and the South Bend Farmers Market.

Although portions of the street-level trail exist between these two locations, sections will be renovated and missing connections established.

The trail from Howard Park to the Sample Street bridge will be closed through mid-September.

The project features a new 10-foot multipurpose trail along Northside Boulevard from Howard Park to the Sample Street bridge. It also includes new lighting and two overlooks, which will be located near the Notre Dame boathouse and the pedestrian bridge.

The lower walkway along the river from Northside Boulevard to the boathouse will be removed and returned to its natural habitat. Some erosion control work is expected in this stretch along with repairs to the historic Works Progress Administration wall.

Various sections of St. Louis/Northside boulevards between Wayne and Sample streets will be closed until mid-August. The detour route will be Jefferson Boulevard and Eddy Street.
