One person killed, others hurt, driver arrested after crash on McKinley Avenue in South Bend

One person was killed, three others hurt and one was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after a crash at McKinley and Manchester in South Bend.

The collision between two vehicles happened around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

The collision happened when a Ford Fusion approached the intersection, traveling westbound on McKinley Ave. At the intersection, a Nissan Sentra was attempting to turn left, from eastbound, to go north on Manchester Drive and the Fusion and Sentra collided.

The crash resulted in non-life threatening injuries to the driver of the Fusion, Anthony Hart, 25, of South Bend.

The driver of the Nissan suffered non-life threatening injuries, as did her front passenger.

A passenger in the rear passenger-side seat, Adam Leroy Wakeman, 36, of South Bend, was killed.

Hart was arrested and booked on preliminary suspicion of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team was activated, per protocol, to
investigate. The investigation remains ongoing and toxicology results are pending.
