The latest draft of the South Bend Police Department Discipline Matrix was unveiled on Thursday, June 18.
The discipline matrix is a guide for officers to know what to expect in the event they break the rules, from a single minor policy violation to repeated major violations.
The disciplines ranging from an oral reprimand to termination. South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski says the document available for both police and public to see.
South Bend Mayor James Mueller said the matrix is not meant to go after officers, but rather to give clarity to officers and the community in what is expected in terms of conduct and how they perform their jobs.
The matrix incorporates feedback gathered from the public electronically and through previous Community Action Group meetings, and includes six levels of possible misconduct with discipline for each category of violation.
