One dead, one missing from area beaches after Labor Day Weekend

At Washington Park Beach in Michigan City, officials say a 16-year-old girl disappeared after jumping off the lighthouse Sunday afternoon. She was pulled from the water unresponsive about an hour later, and died at the hospital.

As of early Monday morning she has only been identified as a New Haven resident.

South Haven had several incidents over the weekend including one where three people were rescued from the water safely; however a rescue on Sunday did not end as well.

A 19-year-old man and his 18-year-old friend were seen struggling in the water; the 19-year-old was saved, the 18-year-old was not. The victim was initially identified only as a Jackson, Michigan resident and the search for him continues.

There were “high risk” warnings in place at both beaches this weekend.
