A longtime Middlebury School Board member and local businesswoman has been selected to replace former State Representative Christy Stutzman.

Joanna King had the backing of Stutzman, as well as Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

King said she cares deeply about the community and won’t be afraid to stand toe-to-toe with anybody, The Elkhart Truth reported.

She will represent District 49, which covers eastern Elkhart County for Stutzman’s term.

Stutzman announced several weeks ago she would be stepping down to focus on her family business.

The other candidates considered by the GOP caucus included Wes Culver, Mike Jacka, Joanna King, and Jason Obendorf.

Indiana Republican Party State Chairman Kyle Hupfer issued this statement following the selection of King:

“Congratulations to Joanna King, our newest state representative, and a new voice for Elkhart County at the Statehouse. I’m looking forward to witnessing the work that Joanna will lead on behalf of this community as part of our strong Republican team in the Indiana House.”
