Buchanan woman injured as she misses deer, hits river

A driver in Berrien County suffered non-life-threatening injuries after swerving to miss a deer and crashing into the St. Joseph River.

Michigan State Police Troopers say the driver, a 25 year-old Buchanan woman, went off East River Road around 10 a.m. Monday morning in Buchanan Township. She also hit two trees and a utility pole before hitting the river.

She was freed with the jaws of life.

The State Police remind drivers that your best bet is to hit your brakes and just hit the deer in this situation, as swerving to avoid it can be a far more dangerous situation. Your odds of survival are better if you slow down instead of swerving.
