Driver of stolen van smashes into Elkhart Fire Department, vehicle, power pole

The driver of a Dodge Caravan reported stolen from Niles, Michigan, smashed through the front door entrance of the Elkhart Fire Department in the 500 block of East Street in Elkhart.

The van then drove off at a high rate of speed

The collision happened around 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29.

Officers were able to locate the van at the intersection of Main and Marion St. The van fled from officers down Beardsley Ave. In the 1400 block of W. Beardsley, the van struck a Nissan Altima with two passengers in it. The van continued on for half a block where it collided with a utility pole.

The driver of the Grand Caravan along with the occupants of the Altima were taken to Elkhart General Hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time. There were no injuries reported from anybody inside the fire department.

The offender’s charges are pending.
