Grandfather sentenced after death of toddler on cruise ship

An Indiana grandfather was sentenced to three years’ probation Monday in the death of his granddaughter, who fell from an 11th-story window of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico.

Salvatore “Sam” Anello, of Valparaiso, Ind., pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in October 2020. Anello was aboard the Royal Caribbean Cruises’ “Freedom of the Seas” ship with his family in July 2019 when 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand fell to her death.

Anello said he didn’t know the window in the children’s play area was open when he lifted Chloe up so she could knock on the glass.

Wiegand’s parents have sued Royal Caribbean in a civil case that is still ongoing.
