Hoosiers advised to resist conducting citizen sting operations

Hoosiers are being advised to refrain from taking part in citizen sting operations.

According to a letter sent by the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office, Indiana has seen an increase in the number of social media “vigilante” groups attempting to go after suspected online sexual predators on their own.

While these groups may have the best intentions, they’re being reminded that operating outside the scope of law enforcement can be extremely dangerous.

When citizens take matters into their own hands, it can be harmful to a successful prosecution, leading to someone eluding accountability for their actions.

If a resident believes someone is guilty of a crime, they’re being asked to pass the information along to local law enforcement.
