Volunteers needed for the polls during Elkhart Schools referendum vote on May 4

The special election for the Elkhart Schools referendum set for May 4 means election volunteers are needed in the Elkhart School District.

If approved, the referendum would provide more than 120 million dollars to increase pay for all employees, reduce their out-of-pocket health insurance costs and continue to provide safe transportation for students at the current levels over the next eight years.

Only residents who live in the Elkhart School District can take part in the special election, but several dozen poll workers are needed.

ABC 57 reports anybody interested in volunteering at the polls for the special election can contact Chad Crabtree at 574-596-6750 or at chad@alumni.iu.edu or Elkhart County Republican Party Chair Dan Holtz by either calling or texting 574-238-6239.

The next referendum town halls are set:

6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Elkhart High School East, 1 Blazer Blvd., Elkhart

6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Elkhart High School West, 2608 California Road, Elkhart.

Stronger Elkhart PAC will also stream each town hall live from its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/StrongerElkhart.

Maybe the school system should have taken care of those pay hikes and insurance issues instead of the $33,000,000 spending boondoggle of rearranging the high schools to better compete in sportsball games…

From openpayrolls.com: “The average employee salary for Elkhart Community School Corporation in 2019 was $44,837. … There are 4,683 employee records for Elkhart Community School Corporation.”

Not counting the transportation debacle (maintaining the current levels? REALLY?) the $120 million works out to $3200 per employee per year.

This referendumB needs to die again, like it has every other time they have brought it up.

Are they kidding with this? The public school systems have utterly failed us all for the past year or so, and that was on top of their already fairly bad results in prior years. I’m sick of paying teachers to virtue signal and indoctrinate kids and argue with parents. I had an Elkhart Community Schools teacher call me a swear word on one of MY social media posts last year, all because she didnt agree with what I had to say. If she was willing to go out of her way to call me names on my post, acting holier than thou and telling me that I needed Jesus (found him already, tyvm) … I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t hesitate to bring her views into the classroom. I’ll be willing to pay teachers more when they learn that their job is to actually teach reading, writing, math, science, etc. and to leave their personal views and thoughts on religion/politics/culture etc. AT HOME.
