New law stiffens penalties for catalytic converter thefts

A new law means stiffer penalties for people who steal catalytic converters.

A bill signed by Governor Holcomb makes stealing a catalytic converter a felony. Steal one and you could face up to two years in prison and a hefty fine.

Catalytic converters are part of a car’s exhaust system and help reduce pollution. The metal they’re made of makes them pretty valuable to thieves, who sell them to scrap yards for cash. Catalytic converters are worth about $200 at a scrap yard and it costs about $2,000 to replace one.
