Woman dead after house fire in Benton Harbor

A woman died after being carried out of a house that caught fire in Benton Harbor.

The blaze broke out, Monday night, May 3, in the 1100 block of McAlister.

On arrival, crews saw thick smoke coming from the downstairs apartment, and heavy flames coming from the back of the residence.

Bystanders told firefighters there was at least one person in the downstairs apartment.

Police and fire crews entered the dwelling and found the woman inside. Once out, she was rushed, via ambulance to Lakeland Hospital. immediate entry into the lower apartment and located a female inside.

The woman was removed from the apartment and rushed to the awaiting ambulance. She was then taken to Lakeland Hospital, but died a couple of hours later.

So far, there is no word about the cause of the fire.
