Goshen announces new downtown vault program

(Ben Quiggle/Elkhart Truth)

The Goshen Redevelopment Commission approved a new downtown vault program.

It offers 50 percent of the cost of backfill material and sidewalk restoration for anyone who chooses to close their vault. Some of the under-the-sidewalk caverns have been there for a century or so.

Property owners are responsible for building the foundation wall that would seal the space off. Vault owners have between June and December to sign up and until October 2022 to complete their project.

Goshen ran a similar program after someone fell through the sidewalk in front of a business in 2012.

Contact the City of Goshen for more information.
