The 29-year-old man who police say was shot by his father, last week, in Marcellus Township has died.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, in the 11000 block of Van Buren Street in Marcellus Township. The 55-year-old father and his son, Cody Gonder, had been drinking, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

The younger Gonder had the gun on his side in a holster and investigators say his dad was able to disarm him and throw the firearm to the side. But they say the younger Gonder came back to assault his dad, who allegedly grabbed the gun and shot his son in the head.

The father was treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

Gonder was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition. On Saturday, May 29, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office stated that Gonder had died.

The case remains under investigation.
