Suspects charged in May 22 shooting at University Park Mall

Two people stand charged in connection with the shooting at University Park Mall back on Saturday, May 22.

The suspects are Luke Murphy, 24, and Dontrell Smith, 31, both of South Bend.

According to court documents, Murphy was in the mall and had words with the victim and displayed a gun. When the victim was leaving through the food court entrance, Murphy approached and began firing. The victim ran off and hid behind a transformer while Murphy allegedly kept shooting.

Smith drove up in a white Dodge SUV, Murphy climbed in and the two took off.

Murphy faces charges of attempted murder and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

Smith faces a charge of assisting a criminal in connection with the shooting.

Murphy has been arrested. Police are still searching for Smith.
