Fireworks safety tips from fire officials in Indiana

Fourth of July is coming up this weekend, which means people will be setting off their own fireworks.

If you plan on lighting your own fireworks show in your yard, you’re being reminded of some safety tips.

“Adults only need to be setting fireworks off,” says Tim Griffin with the Carmel Fire Department. “Never mix alcohol with fireworks. You have to keep those separate. And then make sure you’re on a flat ground and people are a good distance away.”

Griffin says that sparklers are the number one cause for burn injuries, and he recommends you don’t use those with children. Instead, use glow sticks as an alternative.

When you’re buying fireworks at the store, he says he always ask the employees about each set of fireworks and gets details on what they actually do, how far they shoot, and how hot they can get.

Griffin also reminds you to always have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby when you’re shooting off fireworks.
