UPDATE: The Bridge reopened to traffic shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The Mackinac Bridge between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan was closed Sunday afternoon to both automotive and shipping traffic due to what officials called “a bomb threat.”

The U.S. Coast Guard established a perimeter to protect mariners and State and local police conducted multiple sweeps of the entire bridge and surrounding areas to rule out any danger.

The first word of the closure was shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. As of 5 p.m. the bridge remained closed, according to an eyewitness who spoke with 953 MNC.
