A Notre Dame alum has become the first American woman to win a Gold Medal in foil fencing.

Lee Kiefer, a 2017 Notre Dame graduate studying medicine at The University of Kentucky, failed to medal in the previous two Olympics in London and Rio. Her husband, a fellow Domer, won Bronze in the same sport in 2016.

Training for the couple was unusual last year, spending much of their time last year working with COVID patients. That included getting up at 5 a.m. every morning and working with patients instead of practicing her sport.

Kiefer interrupted her medical studies in March, taking a year off to try and win gold in Tokyo.

On Sunday, she reached that goal with a win over a Russian competitor.
