Two set for trial on meth possession, dealing-related charges

Trial is set for early February for two people arrested on drug charges in Elkhart.

Dawn Murphy, 46, and Matthew Bakewell, 50, were arrested after a traffic stop, late last month, at 3rd and Jefferson Streets when police say they found drugs, a ledger and a large amount of cash in their possession.

Officers say Bakewell had close to $7,000 cash stuffed into his pockets.

The Elkhart Truth reports his phone rang continuously while it was being logged as evidence and the screen listed messages and calls from people whose names were in the ledger.

Officers even reportedly saw notifications from payment apps and a message asking about fentanyl come through the phone.

The two each face possession and dealing meth and a controlled substance.
