Smoke continues to paint sunsets in the Midwest

If the sunsets seem a little more colorful this summer, there’s a reason.

As wildfires continue to burn out west, the smoke is being held in the upper atmosphere by winds that are spreading it over our part of the Midwest. So the reds and pinks and oranges of our summer sunsets are being amplified by the high-reaching haze. And the further north into Michigan you go, according to the National Weather Service, the more vibrant the colors.

Last week there were more than 90 wildfires burning in several states and parts of Canada, contributing to the effect.
