Construction begins on the new Coal Line Trail

Construction for the first phase of the new Coal Line Trail that will span from Lincolway West to Riverside Drive is set to begin today.

Phase one of the new 12-foot-wide trail is being build over the old Notre Dame and Western coal line, known as Norfolk Southern.

Once completed, the trail will feature lighting along the trail, benches, a shelter, and even a bike repair shop.

The first phase of construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2021.

The second phase is schedule for 2022 and aims to link phase one to the East Bank and State Road 933 trails.

There will be lane restrictions as well as a short-term closure of Woodward Avenue from Angela to Elwood during the construction.

When finished the Coal Line Trail will be a 1.5 mile path from Lincolnway West to State Road 933.
