Logansport man stationed in Kabul among U.S. service members killed in bomb blast

One of the 13 U.S. service members who died in the Kabul attack was from Logansport.

Marine Corporal Humberto Sanchez was aiding the withdrawal of Afghan citizens at the Kabul airport on Thursday, Aug. 26, when a suicide bomber attacked the departure zone.

Sanchez was a 2017 graduate of Logansport High School.

Logansport Mayor Chris Martin paid homage to Sanchez on a post on Facebook, saying any plans he may have had for his post-military life were given in sacrifice due to the heart he had in putting himself into harm’s way to safeguard the lives of others.

The Logansport Community School Corporation issued the following statement on Facebook Friday night:

Our corporation mourns the loss of US Marine Humberto Sanchez, a graduate of Logansport High School.

We are forever indebted to the service men and women who risk it all to protect others. We will never forget the names of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The mayor of Logansport, Chris Martin, also issued his condolences on Facebook:

This young man had not yet even turned 30 and still had his entire life ahead of him. Any plans he may have had for his post-military life were given in sacrifice due to the heart he exhibited in putting himself into harm’s way to safeguard the lives of others.

Sanchez’s death was also confirmed by two family members.

Governor Eric Holcomb offered the following statement:

I ask all Hoosiers so inclined to send prayers to the family of one of America’s finest, U.S. Marine, Corporal Humberto Sanchez.

Few among us answer a call of duty so dangerous as Corporal Sanchez volunteered to do. In doing so, he made the ultimate sacrifice so others could live and find freedom.

While Janet and I mourn his loss, we hold up his incredible legacy of service above self and vow to honor him in every way we know how.

Congresswoman Victoria Spartz, who represents Indiana’s 5th congressional district, paid her respects on Twitter:

My deepest condolences to the family of Marine Corporal Humberto Sanchez of Logansport, IN. Our country must never forget his ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

The Taliban has taken back control of Afghanistan two decades after they were pushed out in a U.S.-led invasion following the 9/11 attacks. Their return to power has terrified many Afghans, who have rushed to flee the country ahead of the American withdrawal.
