Construction worker killed after jumping from crane on I-94 in Van Buren County

A construction worker was killed late Friday night, Aug. 27, on I-94 in Van Buren County.

The victim was killed while working on an overpass in the Paw Paw area. The initial investigation from Michigan State Police indicates the worker was operating a crane – conducting bridge work.

The worker attempted to jump from the crane when he saw it was about to be struck by a semi.

The interstate was shut down for several hours for the investigation.

The statement from Michigan State Police:

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post and Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred at approximately 9:30 PM this evening in the construction zone on westbound I-94 at County Road 653.

Initial investigation finds that a road construction worker was operating a crane conducting bridge work over-top of the roadway. The worker attempted to jump from the construction equipment prior to it being struck by a westbound semi-truck.

The worker was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the semi suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Bronson Hospital.
