A 78-year-old man from Florida was hospitalized in critical condition after he crashed into the Burger King restaurant on Spruce Street in Dowagiac.

Police and fire crews were called around 3:10 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 17, to find the vehicle running, the tires spinning and the man behind the wheel unresponsive.

The investigation determined that the driver had placed an order at the drive through speaker and then suffered a medical emergency which caused him to strike the building.

The driver was removed and found to be not breathing. First responders were able to restore his breathing and pulse.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Kalamazoo.

The building received just minor damage.
