Niles woman killed, Berrien Springs man seriously injured in crash in Niles Township

A Niles woman was killed and a Berrien Springs man was critically injured in a single car crash in Niles Township.

The collision happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 in the 2600 block of Old US-31 in Niles Township.

Police arrived to find a car pinned against a tree.

The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old Niles woman was trapped in the vehicle. Life saving measures were attempted, but the driver died due to her injuries.

The passenger, an 18-year-old Berrien Springs man, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses to the crash say the vehicle was trying to pass another vehicle on the right shoulder of the road when the driver lost control, overturned, and ultimately struck a tree.

The accident remains under investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigations Unit.
