Anderson man charged with murder has motion for evaluation granted

In June, Wilma Ball was found naked and stabbed to death. There was a beer can on the nightstand next to the bed Ball was found in.

On the can was the DNA of 29-year-old Matthew Hoover of Anderson. Police tracked him down, and was arrested for murder, rape, burglary and abuse of a corpse.

WANE-TV says on Monday, a Steuben County judge granted Hoover’s motion for the evaluation, after his attorney claimed an insanity defense.

Prosecutors say Hoover will be evaluated by two mental health professionals for competency. If he is found competent, the case will then go to trail.

Hoover would be placed into a secure state hospital until he regains competency.

The prosecutor says Hoover qualifies for the death penalty or life without parole, and is still reviewing both options.
