Excessive speed appears to be a factor of a crash that resulted in power outages to homes and businesses in Niles Township, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 25, on South 11th Street near Bertrand Road when a 60-year-old woman driving the vehicle left the road, went airborne, struck a power pole, then came t rest on the roof.

Power was cut to the area.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle. The Niles Township Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to free the driver from the wreckage. She was then taken by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.

This incident remains under investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.
