A plan to restart the Goshen ice rink project by considering a new location isn’t too popular with the downtown economic board.

Plans for an $8-million ice rink and pavilion were shelved in 2020, due to uncertainty about how city finances might suffer because of the pandemic.

The Elkhart Truth reports The Goshen Board of Works has approved a $38,000 study of the potential of building at the east edge of the Goshen College campus.

That location is being considered because the project could be less expensive to see through, with the college sharing some of the costs for parking, restrooms, concessions and more.

However, some members of the downtown board say local businesses would lose out not having the rink close to them and that the long-term benefit outweighs the higher cost.
