Alleged catalytic converter thief caught in the act

A suspect was caught red-handed this week, allegedly committing a crime that has plagued the area in recent months.

Tuesday night at 9 p.m. South Bend Police officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle and someone using a flashlight in the parking lot of Edison Middle School. The officers discovered 22 year-old Jeffrey Vanhuffel-Lopez inside a fenced-in area of the school’s property.

Their report says he had a reciprocating saw and a freshly-cut catalytic converter. He was arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.
