Michigan unemployment fraud during pandemic may have been $8.5 billion

Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency paid up to $8.5 to fraudulent claims during the pandemic, according to a report.

The report was prepared for the agency, and shows an estimated payout of $8.4 to $8.51 billion between March 1 2020 and September 30 2021, while at the same time avoiding paying an estimated $43.7 billion in fraudulent claims.

Julia Dale, the new director of the agency, told The Detroit Free Press that her initial reaction to the report was “outrage.”

Many states faced increased attacks on their overwhelmed unemployment systems as people sought to take advantage of the more generous benefits.

Most of the money paid out in error came from federal programs, with state funding accounting for less than 3% of the fraud payouts.
