Benton Harbor Mayor eyeing Congressional run

Benton Harbor’s mayor has announced a run for Congress.

Mayor Marcus Muhammad has posted on social media, hinting that he might run as an independent in the race for the 4th Congressional District. That same seat is being sought by U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga of Zeeland, a Republican, and Democrat Joseph Alfonso, a resident of Holland.

St. Joseph Republican and long-serving member of Congress Fred Upton has already announced that he will not seek the seat, which will represent a newly drawn district.

Muhammad has been Mayor of Benton Harbor since 2015, and calls himself “a bridge-builder, a unifying agent,” and a “bipartisan champion” who will place service above self-interest.
