If you’ve never eaten the flavorful morel mushroom, found in the woods all over Indiana, or if you’ve never hunted them, your chance is coming in just a few days.

“we’ve seen reports from southern Indiana. So, yeah. It’s gonna happen. I think it’s gonna be a good year,” said morel expert Tom Nauman, on Indiana Outdoors radio. “I think it’s gonna be mostly right on time. There may be a few spots where it’s early or late.”

Nauman said “right on time” mean “Tax Day to mid-may”. Morels are only in season for about a month. That drives their value.

“The average selling price for a fresh pound of morels in season is $65 per lb.,” he said.

Nauman said he believes the ones found in Indiana and in the Midwest have the most flavor. But, if you want the tastiest and largest, it’s best to hunt when the ground temperature is above 50 degrees, which is why you’ll first find them in the southern part of the state.

Nauman said you can find up-to-date online maps of the ground temperature in every county.

He said hunting morels is a challenge because you have to have a trained eye, know exactly what part of the woods in which to seek the mushrooms at any point in the season, and understand how part of the forest floor becomes tasty food.
