Two South Bend Police officers injured trying to detain a man armed with two screwdrivers are recovering, though one of the officers who suffered facial fractures and cuts…

It happened on Thursday, April 7, in the 500 block of South Michigan Street when the officers were called on the report of an unwanted person.

The suspect reportedly punched an officer and, when a taser proved ineffective, the man used the screwdrivers, then ended up on the ground and was taken into custody.

Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski released a video on Facebook saying, “I will not – nor should anybody else – second-guess the decisions that they made.”

One of the officers has returned to work. The other has not yet healed enough to return to duty.
